Tig Notaro’s first name at birth is MathildeO’Callaghan Notaro. The name Tig is actually a childhood nickname from her family. Notaro was born on March 24, 1971. She and her older brother, Renaud Notaro, were raised by their single mother in Pass Christian, Mississippi. The family later moved to Houston, Texas, where her mother remarried.
During school, Notaro was a poor student because of her penchant for entertaining classmates rather than studying. She had to repeat 8th grade twice and when she made it to 9th grade she decided to drop out of school altogether. She would later complete her education from home, earning a GED in the process.
After dropping out of school, Tig Notaro moved to Denver, Colorado in the mid ’90s. There she started a management and talent booking company called Tignation Promotions. Her work for the company eventually brought her to LA in 1996/1997, where she performed her first comedy set at a coffee shop.
After finding her calling, she began performing at other stand-up clubs. Despite the poor pay, she persevered and her hard work paid off. Many in her shoes would have contemplated suicide, but Notaro did not. She decided to turn her tragedy into gold.
Four days after her diagnosis, she took the stage at Largo nightclub and revealed to her audience that she had cancer. Her satirical take on her diagnosis received positive reviews from critics and comedians. The resulting recording of that set was the best-selling comedy album of 2012. Notaro didn’t stop there. After undergoing a double mastectomy (without reconstructive surgery) to treat her cancer, she decided to go topless on stage to show the world her battle scars. She was praised for her bravery.
