Who is Kevin Gates?
The 37-year-old rapper, born Kevin Jerome Gilyard in New Orleans, Louisiana, had a challenging life and was incarcerated at the age of 13 for “joyriding” in a stolen car as a passenger. He began his music career in 2007, signing with the local label Dead Game Records. After releasing two mixtapes under them, he was arrested in 2008, putting a halt to his career. During his time in prison, Gates claimed to have obtained a master’s degree in psychology and was released in 2011 for good behavior.
